Magical Monarch Moment

Magical Monarch Moment

Monarchs are so amazing! I have always loved them. I got to witness a Monarch release and it was truly beautiful. The woman that organized this, Kristin Roof, has harvested over 300 monarchs this year and was very knowledgeable and passionate about these creatures! She let me release a few by passing them along to me. This one decided to stay on my hand for the longest time. I really got to look closely and it felt pretty magical. Some would fly away quickly and others took their time. She would put a little tracking sticker on them so they could be tracked to see if they made all the way to Mexico and record it. How amazing that they can travel 3,000 miles! Many don’t make it.  I felt like it was a moment in time that I got to be part of their journey – the initial part. We were wishing them well on their flight to Mexico. So amazing they even know how to get there right?

As we marveled at these beautiful winged creatures, we would comment – She’s going to make it, or this one needs a little more time. We had one little fellow that had some damage to his wings. He kept trying to fly and would take off quickly but then land on the ground or on a leaf. Well he found his way to my thigh and stayed there for the longest time. I felt like I had to walk really slowly so he wouldn’t fall off but I loved having him there. A new little friend!  I LOVED it! And I made a remark that there is something that is still normal in this crazy world! How important this was to be saving so many butterflies. I vowed to plant some milkweed for them. And this was so grounding to be part of their journey. Such wonder and great caring for these brightly colored winged friends.

I have always wanted to go Mexico to see where they migrate. It’s been on my bucket list and I just haven’t planned it…yet! It’s something to look forward to some day. It was such a grounding experience and I felt so inspired and refreshed afterward. I had a little story going on in my head about all they would encounter.  Perhaps I will write a song of their journey. We’ll see what transpires.
